La Línea Imaginaria

“La Línea Imaginaria” (Imaginary Line) is an installation that honors the borderland. The cacti form made from clay is my interpretation of our Mexican cultural history. This binational exhibition will temporarily join the sister cities El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The exhibition includes sculpture, photography, video, and drawings.
"La Línea Imaginaria" will take place at the Chamizal Museum of Archeology and History and the Chamizal National Memorial in both Juarez Mexico, and El Paso, Texas, from August 12, through November 30, 2022.
Artist Statement:
The same desert landscape that I reinterpret through sculpture and drawings surrounds El Paso and Juarez. Cacti forms from the Chihuahuan Desert are created with raw terracotta clay to honor the borderland, the place of my upbringing. The paths between the sister cities of this place, follow a borderline that we cross back and forth to see our families and friends, to work, and live. I call this the imaginary line where cultural identity is shared in these two sister cities.
Each cactus form is coil-built, pinched, and left in its ephemeral state. I embrace the roughness of the marks left by my hands to create a visceral response to each form. Without spines, the sculptures appear vulnerable, but to me, they exist as part of the land, teaching and reminding us of our personal and cultural history and being a part of the land.

“La Línea Imaginaria” es una instalación que rinde homenaje a la frontera. La forma de cactus hecha de arcilla es mi interpretación de nuestra historia cultural mexicana. Esta exposición binacional se unirá temporalmente a las ciudades hermanas El Paso, Texas y Juárez, Chihuahua, México. La exposición incluye escultura, fotografía, video y dibujos.
"La Línea Imaginaria" se llevará a cabo en el Museo Chamizal de Arqueología e Historia y el Monumento Nacional Chamizal en Juárez México y El Paso, Texas, del 12 de agosto al 30 de noviembre de 2022.
Declaración del artista:
El mismo paisaje desértico que reinterpreto a través de la escultura y el dibujo rodea El Paso y Juárez. Las formas de cactus del desierto de Chihuahua se crean con arcilla de terracota cruda para honrar la frontera, el lugar de mi crianza. Los caminos entre las ciudades hermanas de este lugar, siguen una línea fronteriza que cruzamos de un lado a otro para ver a nuestras familias y amigos, para trabajar y vivir. Llamo a esto, la línea imaginaria donde se comparte la identidad cultural en estas dos ciudades hermanas.
Cada forma de cactus se construye en espiral, se pellizca y se deja en su estado efímero. Las marcas dejadas por mis manos crean una respuesta visceral a cada forma. Sin espinas, las esculturas parecen vulnerables, pero para mí existen como parte de la tierra, enseñándonos y recordándonos nuestra historia personal y cultural y siendo parte de la tierra.
